The sun rises over Catania as we meet in front of the hotel for a new day of discoveries. Ciro is already ready with his inseparable reflex camera, while Annamaria consults a small travel notebook.

“Palermo has always fascinated us,” she says enthusiastically. “A city that tells the story of all of Sicily.”

“It’s our urban tour!” adds Ciro, laughing. “We’re ready to get lost in markets, palaces, and churches. But with you, without really getting lost.”

Our driver opens the doors of the Mercedes with his usual reassuring smile. Palermo is just over two hours from Catania, and the journey, with Sicily Car Service, is an integral part of the experience: comfortable seats, muffled silence, the possibility of relaxing or chatting while ever-changing landscapes pass by.

The road to Palermo: between hills and memory

During the journey, we cross the Sicilian hinterland. Golden hills follow one another, interrupted by olive trees, farmhouses, and small perched villages. Our driver tells us some interesting facts about the region, while Ciro and Annamaria enjoy the scenery.

“In Palermo, I want to see everything,” says Ciro. “The Capo market, the Cathedral, the mosaics… and maybe taste the arancine!”

“One day isn’t enough,” replies Annamaria. “But luckily we have the best possible companion.”

Arrival in the capital: Our Tour of Palermo Begins

We arrive in Palermo around 10:30 am. The city is an explosion of colors, voices, and scents. Our driver drops us off directly in the heart of the historic center, in Piazza Pretoria, where the imposing Fontana della Vergogna (Fountain of Shame) welcomes us, so called because of the nude statues that adorn it.

“But look at this marvel,” exclaims Annamaria. “It’s not shameful, it’s extraordinary!”

“Palermo is like this,” says our driver. “It combines art, irony, history, and daily life in every corner.”

The Arab-Norman heart: the Cathedral and the Norman Palace

First stop: the majestic Palermo Cathedral, a masterpiece of Arab-Norman, Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical architecture. Each era has left its mark on this church that seems like an encyclopedia in stone.

“It’s incredible,” says Ciro, snapping a series of photos of the facade. “I can’t find a single dominant style.”

“That’s because Palermo was Arab, Norman, Spanish, and then Italian,” explains the driver. “And it has managed to make everything coexist.”

Inside, we are moved by the royal tombs, including that of Frederick II, the “Stupor Mundi” (Wonder of the World). Ciro reads aloud an excerpt from a guide:

“He was emperor, king, poet, patron of the arts. He spoke six languages and loved science. He is buried here, in the heart of the Sicily he loved.”

“A free spirit,” murmurs Annamaria. “Like Palermo.”

We continue on foot towards the Palazzo dei Normanni (Norman Palace), now the seat of the Sicilian Regional Assembly. But what really catches the eye is the Cappella Palatina (Palatine Chapel): a triumph of golden mosaics that leaves you speechless.

“Never seen anything like it,” whispers Ciro, looking at the Christ Pantocrator that dominates the apse. “The gold shines as if it were lit from within.”

“Every detail is poetry,” adds Annamaria. “And to think we are in the heart of a political building…”

A dive into the popular markets: Il Capo

Leaving the silence of the Chapel, we venture into the lively Mercato del Capo (Capo Market). Here, Palermo shows its most authentic side: vendors shouting in dialect, intense colors, the scents of spices, fresh fish, citrus fruits, and sweets.

“Here are the arancine!” exclaims Ciro, stopping in front of a counter.

We take two: one with ragù (meat sauce), one with butter. We eat them standing up, like true Palermitans.

“Flavors you don’t forget,” says Annamaria. “And the city gets under your skin, in every sense.”

We also stop at the Chiesa dell’Immacolata Concezione (Church of the Immaculate Conception), hidden among the stalls: a Baroque jewel completely decorated inside, a marvel often overlooked by hurried tourists.

“Palermo must be experienced like this,” says the driver. “Without haste. We are here precisely for this: to let you enjoy every detail, without the anxiety of driving, looking for parking, or following the clock.”

The afternoon in Monreale: the pinnacle of beauty

In the afternoon, we move a few kilometers from Palermo, towards the hill of Monreale, where one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the world stands.

Our driver takes us all the way up, avoiding crowded roads and giving us direct access just a few steps from the monument.

“Welcome to the Norman masterpiece,” he says. “Here, art and faith truly meet.”

We enter and are left speechless: over 6,000 square meters of Byzantine mosaics, with a golden light that makes everything mystical.

“It’s hard to explain what you feel inside here,” says Ciro, photographing the vault.

“Words are not needed,” replies Annamaria. “You feel it with your soul.”

Going up to the cloister of the Benedictines, we lose ourselves among sculpted columns and elegant arches. Each capital tells a different story.

“Palermo and Monreale are two sides of the same enchantment,” concludes Annamaria.

Return with the sunset over the sea

Our driver welcomes us back with his usual smile and offers us fresh water. During the return journey, the sun begins to set, tinging the hills with red and gold.

“It was an intense but perfect day,” says Ciro. “And everything was possible because we didn’t have to worry about anything.”

“We just lived. Really lived,” adds Annamaria.
