A stroll through the heart of Catania: history, art, and legends with Michele and Brigitte

✨ A day of culture and charm in the baroque heart of Catania. The Sicilian sun gently caresses the city of Catania as Michele and Brigitte board our car with driver. Today is dedicated to discovering the old city,

an itinerary that blends culture, legends, and baroque charm, in a perfect balance of history and atmosphere.

"Are we exploring your city today, Michele?" asks Brigitte, as the driver sets the navigator to Ursino Castle.

"Yes, and you'll fall in love with it. Catania has an ancient soul, but it's alive."

🏰 Ursino Castle: medieval fortress and symbol of resistance

The first stop is the majestic Ursino Castle, built by Frederick II of Swabia in the 13th century. Once located on a promontory overlooking the sea, the castle is now inland due to Mount Etna's lava flows which, over the centuries, have transformed the landscape.

"It was a defensive stronghold, you know?" Michele recounts. "It's incredible to think that the sea once washed against its walls."

Brigitte observes the thick lava stone walls: "It has something solemn and proud about it, as if it has resisted everything."

Inside, the halls house archaeological collections and temporary exhibitions. The atmosphere is evocative, amidst soft lighting and ancient stones.

🌍 Via Etnea: the city's backbone

Leaving the castle, they proceed towards Via Etnea, the city's main artery. An elegant avenue that cuts through the historic center, connecting Piazza del Duomo with Piazza Stesicoro.

"Look at that perspective!" exclaims Brigitte. "Mount Etna in the background looks like the city's guardian."

"That's right," Michele replies. "And every glimpse tells a story."

They walk among baroque palaces built with lava stone, wrought iron balconies, and historic shops. Along the street, you can feel the true soul of Catania: lively, noisy, welcoming.

🏛️ Piazza Università and its candelabras: myth and mystery

Arriving at Piazza Università, Michele points out the famous four bronze candelabras, true works of art that tell ancient Catanian legends.

"Each candelabra represents a story: Gammazita, Colapesce, Uzeta, and the Pious Brothers," he explains.

Brigitte, intrigued, approaches one of the artistic lampposts. "The one with the girl throwing herself into the well... is that Gammazita?"

"Yes. A young woman who preferred death to surrendering to the French invader. A symbol of dignity and pride."

Our driver, discreetly, also tells them about Colapesce, the young man who supports Sicily from beneath the sea, a beloved legend throughout the island.

⛪ Piazza Duomo and Saint Agatha: faith, art, and identity

In the heart of the city, Piazza Duomo welcomes our guests with the splendor of Sicilian Baroque. The Duomo of Sant'Agata, dedicated to the city's patron saint, stands majestically with its imposing facade.

Turismo in Sicilia: Catania

"Every February 5th, this square fills with faithful in procession for Saint Agatha," Michele explains. "A touching and powerful moment."

Brigitte, struck by the cathedral's decorations, stands in silence. A short distance away, the lava stone Elephant – the "Liotru," symbol of Catania – watches over the square.

"An elephant? Here?" she asks, surprised.

"A Roman statue, which became the city's protector. They say it wards off Etna's eruptions."

🌸 The final relaxation: coffee and granita in Piazza Stesicoro

The stroll ends in Piazza Stesicoro, from which you can admire the ancient Roman amphitheater, partly visible below street level.

Catania Vecchia

"Catania is truly built upon itself, each era on top of the other," Brigitte reflects.

Sitting in a shaded cafe, the two enjoy a lemon granita and a warm brioche. The atmosphere is lively, and the city vibrates with history, warmth, and hospitality.
