It is a bright and serene morning when we find ourselves in front of the hotel in Taormina to welcome Anna and Giuseppe. The two, always smiling and full of enthusiasm, are waiting for us, ready for another day of discovery.

Giuseppe, looking at the clear sky above Mount Etna, exclaims:
"Today we're going to Syracuse, right? I finally want to see Ortigia!"

Anna nods, enthusiastic:
"I've heard it's a magical place, suspended between myth and history... I can't wait!"

🚘 A trip towards the ancient power of the Mediterranean

The road from Taormina to Syracuse is an open-air story. As we drive along the Ionian coast, the landscape alternates between prickly pears, olive groves, and small towns that look like they're straight out of a postcard.

"It's incredible how varied this land is," Giuseppe comments.
"And to think that it was fought over by Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs... a crossroads of civilizations," adds Anna, who has carefully prepared by reading some guides.

Our driver, with his usual discretion and friendliness, enriches the trip with stories and curiosities:
"Syracuse, you know, was considered one of the most powerful cities in ancient Greece, so much so that it was even feared by Athens. And Ortigia is its beating heart: an island within an island."

🏛️ Ortigia: a dive into history, among temples, squares, and legends

As soon as we cross the bridge that connects the mainland to the islet of Ortigia, Anna is enchanted:
"But it's wonderful... look at those buildings, Giuseppe!"

The day begins with a walk in Piazza Duomo, which with its Baroque buildings and the majestic Cathedral always takes your breath away. The cathedral, in fact, is built on top of an ancient Doric temple dedicated to Athena, and still preserves its original columns today.

"It's like walking through the centuries," Anna whispers.
"Here, every stone tells a story," adds Giuseppe, observing the details sculpted on the facade.

We continue towards the Fountain of Arethusa, one of the most legendary places in Ortigia. According to myth, the nymph Arethusa, to escape the god Alpheus, was transformed into a fountain by Artemis and reappeared right here, on the other side of the sea. The legend, even today, fascinates visitors.

"You know, Giuseppe," Anna says with a smile, "I would also transform myself into a fountain just to stay in such a beautiful place!"
"I hope it's not necessary! I prefer to bring you here by car with air conditioning," he replies, laughing.

🍽️ Lunch with a sea view and Mediterranean atmospheres

After exploring the alleys, the artisan shops, and the terraces with a sea view, it's time for a gastronomic break. Ortigia, in fact, is also about food, intense flavors, and scents that speak of the Mediterranean.

We have lunch in a small restaurant overlooking the promenade. The menu? Very fresh fish, Pachino tomatoes, capers, black olives, and a glass of Etna white wine.

"This is the life!" exclaims Giuseppe, raising his glass.
"And to think that the day isn't over yet," adds Anna, caressing the edge of her plate with the smile of someone who knows they are in the right place.

🧘‍♀️ Relax and shopping in the alleys

In the afternoon, Ortigia becomes quieter. The sun begins to set slowly, coloring the light stone buildings with an ancient gold. Anna indulges in some shopping among the local artisan shops: ceramics, handmade jewelry, Sicilian essences.

Giuseppe, on the other hand, stops in a small bookstore where he buys a volume on Archimedes, the famous mathematician and inventor born right in Syracuse.

"You can't leave Ortigia without a cultural souvenir!" he comments proudly.

🌅 The return on board, without worries

With the sunset painting the sky orange, we head towards the car. The atmosphere is serene, almost suspended.

"I never thought I would experience all of this in a single day," Anna reflects.
"And without having to worry about roads, parking, heat, traffic... the choice of car rental with a driver was truly perfect," adds Giuseppe, already relaxed in the comfortable seats of our air-conditioned vehicle.

As the car glides gently along the coast in the direction of Taormina, we know that the time we just spent was not a simple excursion, but a small journey through time, in the heart of the most authentic Sicily.
