Deep in the Nebrodi Mountains: Discover Megaliths, Medieval Villages, and Tyrrhenian Views
☀️ From the Ionian coast to the coolness of Montalbano Elicona. After several days spent among the wonders of the Ionian coast, Maurizio and Salvina felt the need for a break from the summer heat which, although mitigated by our **chauffeur-driven car's** air conditioning, was starting to become noticeable.
So, early this morning, we set off towards the Messina hinterland, to **Montalbano Elicona**, one of Italy's most beautiful villages, nestled among the Nebrodi Mountains.
"Finally some fresh air!" exclaimed Salvina, looking out the window as the road began to climb through woods and ridges.
"And what a view! This Sicily is a continuous surprise," added Maurizio, with his phone ready to capture every glimpse among the valleys.
Along the way, we stopped at the famous **Megaliths of Argimusco**, a fascinating prehistoric site, shrouded in mystery. The enormous stones, shaped by the wind and perhaps by man, evoke anthropomorphic and animal figures. Some scholars believe that this place had a sacred meaning for ancient populations, perhaps used as an astronomical observatory.
"It reminds me a bit of Stonehenge," commented Maurizio, walking among the monoliths.
"And to think we're in Sicily! Who would have thought," replied Salvina, struck by the evocative power of that landscape, suspended between myth and reality.
🏰 Montalbano Elicona: a leap into the Middle Ages
Continuing our journey, the sight of **Montalbano Castle** welcomed us like a crown among the stone roofs of the village. Built in the Norman era and subsequently expanded under the reign of Frederick II of Swabia, the castle is an architectural and historical gem. Its internal halls tell centuries of dominations, battles, and court life.
"Did you see what a view from up there? It feels like you can touch the sky with a finger," said Salvina, looking out from one of the crenellated towers.
Walking through the cobbled alleys of Montalbano Elicona is like taking a journey back in time. Stone houses, arched doorways, artisan shops, and slow silences that speak more than a thousand words.
"I feel like I'm in a historical movie," whispered Maurizio, gazing at one of the small squares illuminated by the midday sun.
For lunch, we chose a local trattoria offering traditional Nebrodi dishes: macaroni with black Nebrodi pork sauce, fresh porcini mushrooms, and, of course, baked ricotta with Sicilian black bee honey.
🌊 Capo d'Orlando and return to Taormina
In the afternoon, we set off again, this time heading towards the Tyrrhenian coast. The destination: **Capo d'Orlando**, for a walk along the promenade and a coffee with a view of the **Aeolian Islands**, which stood out clearly on the horizon.
"Look at Stromboli down there! If I'm not mistaken, it even has a plume of smoke," Maurizio observed, enthusiastically pointing to the volcanic island.
"Every corner of this region is poetry," added Salvina, as they walked hand in hand along the palm-lined promenade.
After a brief visit to the town center, with its elegant venues and artisan shops, it was time to return.
The return journey, via the highway from Capo d'Orlando to Messina and then to Taormina, was peaceful. The sun slowly set, painting the sky in pink and gold.
"A perfect day," said Maurizio, looking at the panorama that opened up beyond the window.
"And tomorrow?" asked Salvina, smiling.
"Tomorrow a new wonder, with our car always ready to take us where dreams await."
