In Montalbano's Footsteps: A Day Trip to Modica, Scicli, and Punta Secca
The sun is already high when Maurizio and Salvina board our car, ready for a new day discovering the most authentic Sicily. After a breakfast with an Etna view, they head south: today they'll visit Modica, Scicli, and **Punta Secca**, the iconic locations that served as the backdrop for the famous Inspector Montalbano series, based on Andrea Camilleri's novels.
π Towards Baroque Sicily
During the journey, as the car leaves the green hills and sun-drenched countryside behind, our driver recounts:
"These places have become famous worldwide thanks to the TV series, but even without the cameras, they would be true jewels of art and culture."
Maurizio and Salvina listen, fascinated.
"Did you know we became hooked on the series during lockdown?" she says. "Seeing these places in person is almost like stepping into an episode."
ποΈ First Stop: Modica, City of Chocolate and Stone
Arriving in **Modica**, the first impression is typical of **Baroque Sicily**: **sumptuous palaces**, **monumental staircases**, and a city that develops vertically, embracing two valleys. The imposing **Duomo di San Giorgio** welcomes them, with its staircase seemingly carved from golden stone.
"The episode *The Shape of Water* was filmed here," says our driver.
"And it's also the heart of Modican Baroque. Look at the curved lines, the columns, the wrought-iron balconies."
But Modica isn't just art. It's also **chocolate**. A must-stop is an **ancient confectionery**, where Maurizio and Salvina taste the famous **Modican chocolate**, prepared with the traditional Aztec recipe, granular and spicy.
"It's different from any other chocolate," says Maurizio.
"It's almost like chewing history," Salvina adds with a smile.
π₯ Scicli: Italy's Most Famous Police Station
They continue towards **Scicli**, another Baroque gem nestled among the hills. Walking along the cobbled streets, they arrive at **Palazzo Iacono**, today the **fictional headquarters of the Vigata Police Station** in the series.
"There it is!" exclaims Salvina. "The door where Montalbano enters his office!"
"It's almost surreal to be here," says Maurizio. "Camilleri truly brought a world to life."
Our driver, always helpful, also guides them to the **Scicli Town Hall**, where the police commissioner's room was set. A visit that combines a passion for the TV series with an immersion in art: **noble palaces, decorated balconies, and spectacular churches** appear around every corner.
"Every frame of the series looks like a work of art; now I understand why," Salvina comments, looking at the panorama.
π Punta Secca: Montalbano's Sea
After lunch at a typical trattoria β with arancini, pasta alla norma, and a lemon granita for dessert β the journey continues towards **Punta Secca**, a small fishing village in the municipality of Santa Croce Camerina.
Here, welcoming them, is **Montalbano's house**, right by the sea.
"It's as if he could walk out that door at any moment," says Maurizio.
The beach is peaceful, dotted with fishing boats. The **Punta Secca Lighthouse** completes the scenery, creating a perfect postcard. The two sit on a bench and gaze at the horizon.
"Living here must be wonderful," sighs Salvina.
"Maybe one day we'll come back for a whole week," Maurizio suggests.
π Between Literature and Reality
Walking along the promenade, our driver shares a few anecdotes:
"Camilleri used real places but gave them fictional names: Vigata, Marinella, Montelusa... But today they've become almost more real than their original names."
Maurizio nods:
"As if imagination managed to restore value to this land."
"And our chauffeur-driven car," adds Salvina with a smile, "allowed us to experience everything without stress. Just emotions and beauty."
π The Return to Taormina
The day draws to a close, but their hearts are full. The car sets off again, crossing the **Ragusa countryside** once more, dotted with dry stone walls and olive trees.
"What a day!" says Maurizio.
"Today we didn't just see places," adds Salvina. "We lived stories."
