Maurizio and Salvina: The first day of their Sicilian vacation, discovering Mount Etna
π The call of the volcano. As soon as they got into our chauffeured car, Maurizio and Salvina had no doubts about what their first stop on their trip to Sicily should be: Mount Etna.
"We saw it from above, as the plane descended on Catania," says Salvina, excited. "It looked like a sleeping giant."
"But not so sleepy," adds Maurizio. "That wisp of smoke in the distance looked like a signature in the sky."
Our driver smiles from the rearview mirror. "Etna always makes an impression. And it's much closer than it seems."
The road leading to the south side of the volcano winds through increasingly suggestive landscapes: it starts from the sea, crosses lively villages fragrant with orange blossom and pistachio, and then begins to climb, among now dormant lava flows and woods that change color with altitude.
βΊ Rifugio Sapienza and the Silvestri Craters
Our first stop is Rifugio Sapienza, at about 1,900 meters (approx. 6,233 feet) above sea level. Here the temperature is cooler, the sky clear, and the air crisp but invigorating.
"What an incredible view," says Maurizio, getting out of the car. "You can see all the way to the sea!"
"And look at those black flows, they look like scars on the mountain's skin," observes Salvina.
We walk together to the Silvestri Craters, two dormant volcanic cones that can be explored on foot. The porous rocks crunch underfoot and the smell of sulfur is still faint but present.
"Did you hear that?" asks Salvina. "It's like the mountain is breathing."
"It's not just any mountain," replies our driver. "Etna is alive, and it's one of the most active volcanoes in Europe."
ποΈ Breathtaking views and high-altitude excursion
For those who wish, it is possible to go even higher thanks to specialized jeeps and authorized guides. Maurizio and Salvina, curious, decide to continue.
"It's not every day you get to walk on an active volcano," says Maurizio.
Arriving at an altitude of 2,900 meters (approx. 9,514 feet), the landscape is lunar. The wind blows strongly and the earth has a thousand shades of red, black, and gray.
"I feel like I'm on Mars," exclaims Salvina.
The guide talks about the five central craters still active, the last eruption visible even from Taormina a few days earlier, and the legends linked to the god Hephaestus and the Cyclops.
"Some say that below here is the forge of the gods," the guide smiles. "And every roar is the sound of hammers striking."
πΏ Return through the Etnean landscapes and a stop in Zafferana
On the way back, we stop in Zafferana Etnea, a small town famous for its honey and its views.
"We deserve a granita," our driver suggests.
Sitting at a shaded table, they enjoy a pistachio and lemon granita, while the view sweeps between Etna on one side and the sea on the other.
"This is exactly the kind of vacation we wanted," says Salvina. "No stress, no worries. Just beauty."
π The value of car rental with driver in Sicily
Thanks to our car rental with driver service, Maurizio and Salvina were able to experience every moment without the worry of traffic, driving on unfamiliar roads, parking, or the heat. They traveled in an air-conditioned environment, with an experienced, punctual, and helpful driver who was also available to suggest stops outside the classic tourist circuits.
"We had read about your advantages on the website," says Maurizio as we get back in the car. "But experiencing them is a whole different thing."
"A real treat," adds Salvina.
With the sun setting behind the volcano, we return to Taormina. The first true day of vacation ends with hearts full of emotions.
