The Salt Cathedral of Realmonte, Reachable by Car with Driver
Sicily never ceases to surprise. After days spent among dreamlike coasts, ancient temples, and charming villages, Ciro and Annamaria surprise us with a request off the beaten track.
“We read about the Salt Cathedral in Realmonte on your blog,” says Annamaria as she meets us in the hotel lobby. “It looks like an incredible place. Can we go there today?”
“A church carved out of salt, 100 meters underground!” adds Ciro, already ready with his reflex camera. “We can’t miss it.”
The driver from Sicily Car Service, who knows Sicily like the back of his hand, smiles knowingly: “If you want to be moved in silence, today I’ll take you to the heart of the earth. Get ready: the Salt Cathedral is one of those places that leave a mark.”
Traveling to Realmonte with a Chauffeur-Driven Car
Our Mercedes takes us with elegance and comfort along the southwestern coast of the island. The road from Catania to Realmonte is a succession of soft hills, golden fields, centuries-old olive groves, and landscapes that look like they came out of a postcard.
“Traveling with you is a fundamental part of the experience,” says Ciro as he settles into the back seat. “Without having to think about the road, we enjoy every detail.”
Our driver smiles from the rearview mirror. “That’s what we’re here for: to let you experience Sicily, not just see it.”
Realmonte: The City of Salt and Hidden Beauty
Arriving in Realmonte, a small town in the province of Agrigento, we are greeted by a landscape overlooking the sea. But the real treasure, today, is hidden beneath our feet.
The Realmonte salt mine, still active, is managed by Italkali. We descend with an expert guide through tunnels carved into the rock salt, a shiny, compact material that covers the walls like raw marble.
“It feels like entering another world,” says Annamaria, astonished. “The walls look hand-carved… and yet they’re natural?”
“Yes,” replies the guide. “This mine dates back about 6 million years, when the Mediterranean Sea dried up during the so-called Messinian salinity crisis. Here, salt deposited in enormous layers, forming real underground canyons.”
The silence is profound, broken only by the sound of our footsteps and the guide’s fascinating story.
“Dozens of miners still work here,” he adds, “but one of the most special areas has been transformed into a sacred place.”
The Salt Cathedral: A Work of Art Carved in Rock
And then, finally, there it is. After about 800 meters of walking in the heart of the earth, the Salt Cathedral opens up before us, an underground church completely carved out of the mine, about 100 meters deep.
The walls and columns are all made of pure salt, decorated with religious bas-reliefs: crosses, altars, sacred figures. The heart of the place is an altar carved directly into the wall and topped by a large cross. The lighting is soft, created by LED lights that enhance its natural veins.
“I have goosebumps,” whispers Annamaria. “There’s something deeply spiritual here.”
“Nothing is built,” notes Ciro. “Yet it looks like a real basilica.”
The guide explains that the Salt Cathedral is consecrated to Christian worship and that masses, weddings, and sacred music concerts are occasionally celebrated here.
“It was born from the miners’ desire to have a place of prayer down here,” he recounts. “A spiritual refuge in the heart of their toil.”
The visit continues through small side rooms and a wall where, with humility and faith, the miners have engraved names, dedications, and invocations.
Ciro approaches a wall: “Look… they wrote with their fingernails. It’s incredible.”
“Every scratch is a story,” says the guide.
The Return to Light: Reflections After a Unique Experience
Slowly climbing back towards the outside, the contrast with the sunlight is dazzling. We emerge in silence, still enveloped by the suggestion of that underground world.
“I expected something beautiful, but I didn’t think it would touch me so deeply,” confesses Annamaria.
“It was an almost mystical experience,” adds Ciro. “And having lived it this way, without rushing, without worries… made all the difference.”
Our driver greets us with a bottle of fresh water and a smile.
“How was it in the heart of the earth?”
“Indescribable,” replies Annamaria. “And now… we deserve a beautiful Sicilian panorama to end on a high note.”
“I know where to take you,” replies the driver. “Follow me.”
Bonus Stop: Belvedere on the Scala dei Turchi
Before returning, we stop a short distance away, on a small belvedere that offers an extraordinary view of the Scala dei Turchi (Turkish Steps), which Ciro and Annamaria had already visited days before.
“It’s different every time,” says Ciro, taking more photos. “The light changes, and it looks like another place.”
“And today, after the depth of the salt, we needed a dip in the light of the sea,” adds Annamaria.
The Return Journey: A Sicily to Listen To
During the journey back to Catania, the silence is broken only by the calm voice of our driver who, as always, enriches the experience with stories and anecdotes.
“Did you know that here, in the Realmonte area, there were ancient salt pans as early as Roman times? And that salt, in Latin, was called ‘salarium’, from which the word ‘salary’ also derives?”
“They paid soldiers in salt?” asks Ciro, surprised.
“Exactly. It was a precious commodity. Just like this island.”
Annamaria leans back in her seat with a smile. “Every day a treasure. Every day a new face of Sicily.”
