The entrance to the Alcantara Botanical and Geological Park is already an experience. The Alcantara Gorges, up to 25 meters high and only a few meters wide in some points, were formed thousands of years ago by a lava flow from Etna which, upon contact with the cold water of the Alcantara river, solidified into surprising shapes.
"Look at those basalt columns!" exclaims Salvina, pointing to the gorge walls.
"They look carved by a giant..." adds Maurizio.
"According to a local legend," the driver recounts, "it was the god Vulcan who created them in an attempt to tame the river that threatened his fires."
The rocks seem alive, with black and grey veins reflecting in the crystal-clear water. Some visitors venture in with boots and waterproof trousers, but Maurizio and Salvina prefer to enjoy the view from above, taking photos and letting the breeze caress them.
💧 Feet in the water, light heart
Our driver accompanies them along a simpler path that leads to a small beach formed by dark pebbles, smoothed by time and current. Maurizio takes off his shoes and walks into the cold water.
"It's freezing!" he exclaims, laughing.
Salvina cautiously follows him, then lets go:

"This is the Sicily we love," says Salvina.
"The one made of silences, scents, and ancient flavors," adds Maurizio.
Slow return to Taormina, between thoughts and promises
In the afternoon, the car departs towards Taormina. The hills are tinged with gold under the sunset light.
"We didn't think such a 'close' day could be so intense," Maurizio confesses.
"That's the beauty of traveling with someone who truly knows the places," adds Salvina, thanking the driver.
Before returning to the hotel, a brief stop at a panoramic point to look at Etna on the horizon. Immobile, but always present.
"We passed close by... but it always attracts us," says Maurizio.
"Maybe tomorrow..." the driver smiles.
