Cefalù, between sea, culture, and ancient mysteries.
The sun is already high when we leave Palermo, with the sea breeze filtering through the window and the promise of a new memorable day. Anna and Giuseppe, now perfectly at ease in our car with a driver, enjoy the road that runs along the sea, crossing landscapes that look like paintings.
"So today we're going to Cefalù?" asks Giuseppe, already ready with his camera bag.
"Exactly!" we reply, smiling. "One of the most picturesque towns in Sicily. You'll love it, I'm sure. Get ready to walk through history, legends, and one of the most beautiful views on the island."
A little jewel at the foot of the Rock
Cefalù appears on the horizon like a postcard: an ancient fishing village embraced by the sea and dominated by an imposing rock, almost a silent guardian that watches over its secrets. The city, whose name derives from the Greek "Kephaloidion," meaning “head” or “promontory,” was founded by the Greeks but flourished especially under Norman rule.
Our first stop is Cefalù Cathedral, an architectural marvel commissioned by Roger II in 1131. According to legend, the king vowed to build a church if he survived a storm: having miraculously landed on the coasts of Cefalù, he kept his promise.
The imposing facade with its twin towers immediately strikes Anna. "It looks like a fortress!" she exclaims.
"And inside it's even more surprising," we reply. "There are some of the most beautiful Byzantine mosaics in all of Europe."
And in fact, upon entering, you are left breathless. The Christ Pantocrator that dominates the apse illuminates the interior with his solemn gaze. Every detail tells a piece of the world, in a perfect balance between Latin, Arab, and Byzantine art.
The Medieval Washhouse and the alleys
After the visit to the Cathedral, we get lost in the alleys of the historic center. Every corner is a spontaneous work of art: flowered balconies, glimpses of the sea, artisan shops, pastry shops with windows full of cannoli and cassata.
"Let's stop here, I absolutely want to taste everything!" Anna laughs, pointing to a small family-run pastry shop. A cannolo and a coffee give us the energy to continue towards another evocative place: the Medieval Washhouse.
Carved into the rock and fed by a natural spring, this ancient washhouse is a glimpse into daily life of the past. "Imagine the village women here washing clothes, amidst gossip and secrets," says Giuseppe, as he observes the stone basins and arches.
The Rock: between mythology and breathtaking views
For the more adventurous—and Anna and Giuseppe seem to be—we suggest the climb to the Rock of Cefalù, a hill that offers one of the most spectacular views on the island. The well-maintained path crosses ancient megalithic walls, the remains of the Temple of Diana (dating back to the 9th century BC), and a view that embraces the entire village, the sea, and, on clear days, even the Aeolian Islands.
"It's worth every drop of sweat!" exclaims Giuseppe once at the top. And it's hard to argue with him.
Legend has it that the Temple of Diana was dedicated to the goddess of hunting and nature, protector of women and water sources. A place of worship that combines the sacred and the mysterious, immersed in the silence and the wind that caresses the ancient stone.
The value of the journey, the value of comfort
After the descent, we head towards the promenade. The waves gently break on the golden sand, and many people take advantage of the opportunity for a dip in the turquoise sea.
"We really relaxed today," comments Anna, getting into the car with her hair tousled by the wind. "Without having to think about where to park, where to go... it's like having a Sicilian friend who guides you."
"Exactly," adds Giuseppe. "And we would never have discovered certain corners on our own."

A farewell under the stars
The day ends in a small restaurant overlooking the sea, where our guests taste fresh fish and a glass of white wine from the Madonie region. The colors of the sunset paint Cefalù in pink and orange, while the lights turn on one by one in the village.
"If we had to choose one place to return to... this would be at the top of the list," says Anna with a smile.
"Meanwhile, we are happy to have been here today," we reply. "And tomorrow, a new adventure awaits us."
Because Sicily never ceases to amaze. And every day can be the best of the trip.
