«We could use some fresh water, the kind that's truly rejuvenating,» Giuseppe had said during dinner the night before, enjoying the view of Taormina.
And so, this morning, ready and smiling, we welcomed them into our air-conditioned vehicle, headed for the Alcantara Gorges. A place where nature has sculpted, with millennial patience, one of Italy's most fascinating geological wonders.
A road between citrus groves and ancient lava
The distance from Taormina is short—just over 30 minutes—but it's enough to enter another world. During the journey, the windows show cultivated fields, citrus groves, and ancient dry-stone walls. After the refreshing water, it's time for a break. Not far from the Gorges, we find a farmhouse immersed in nature, with a view of the Etna vineyards and traditional cuisine. A simple but delicious lunch: pasta with cherry tomato sauce from Etna, eggplant rolls, and cassatelle with ricotta.
Giuseppe raises a glass of local red wine: «To Sicily, which always surprises us!»
The return to Taormina between silence and smiles
The afternoon slips away gently. In the car, cool and far from the scorching heat, Anna and Giuseppe relax as the road takes them back toward the coast.
